This is part of a series of articles describing the creation of my own MMO client for Viva Pinata, using only GTK and GStreamer.
If you don’t care about how to make an MMO, feel free to skip to the (not so) technical parts. If you want to know the why’s and how’s of designing my own MMO client, then keep reading.
World of Viva Pinata is still a work in progress, as you can see from the lack of any sort of graphics for the player, NPCs and items, and the fact that the Z-axis is currently placed on the center of the screen, instead of the bottom.
As you can see from the screenshot, the GUI is made in GTK+ 2.16 with GTKMM 1.0.
How I thought I’d make my client?
It’s hard to choose how you should build a MMO client, as everyone has their own opinion on how it should be done. But I decided that the following list should cover the basics of what should be included:
I use GTK+ 2.16, because it’s the latest version, and also a pain to use on Linux. I like the new widgets provided by GTKMM 1.0, so why not use them?
I decided to use GStreamer as my audio and video backend. GStreamer is a highly customizable piece of software, allowing me to use it in the manner I want. I found GStreamer to be less complicated to setup than Xine, VLC and MPlayer.
I decided to make a client that was completely integrated into the game, so I would not need to install other pieces of software for my MMO. This means that you would need to install GStreamer, OpenAL, the GTK+ and GTKMM libraries, and the Viva Pinata client.

Obscure-Extractor (OE) is a program that extracts data files (usually
archive files like RAR or ZIP) from games. To make it simple, the tool
doesn’t care about compression formats or compression algorithms. It just
compares sizes of archives, and extracts files which are smaller. You can
even delete files from the archive if they are bigger. Of course, you can
extract any file you want, even it is not part of the archive.

About the program

Originally, Obscure-Extractor (OE) was designed to be used in Delphi. It
was used in Delphi V6 to extract data files from.sqx files. That was the
reason for the simple way of extracting. But, after Delphi V6 was dropped,
OE became obsolete. Its author forgot about it, and published Delphi source
code on a web-page.
As of version 1.5.0, Obscure-Extractor (OE) has become a full-fledged
Gtk+ application. All files are packed in.deb package and can be installed
on any modern Linux, FreeBSD or OS/2 machine.
OE now supports most common formats:

– ZIP archives.
– 7-Zip archives.
